North Devon stretches from the beautiful North Devon coastline down to the rolling countryside of mid Devon. It includes places such as Ilfracombe, Barnstaple and Croyde and Woolacombe with their Blue Flag beaches.
Tarka Country takes in the 'Land of the Two Rivers', namely the Taw and Torridge Rivers. The story of Tarka the Otter was written based on the life of an otter on these rivers and their tributaries. A figure-of-eight walk is also able to be walked, with some 30 or so miles being able to be cycled traffic-free on old railway tracks. This is the Tarka Trail.
Ruby Country covers much of mid Devon, touching parts of Tarka Country and again providing a range of lovely country walks and cycle rides. It is so called after the Ruby Red cattle commonly seen on the organically-run farms of this area.
North Devon is renowned for its tranquility and makes for the perfect cycling holiday. Coupled with the delightful cycleways, there are miles of quiet country lanes showing the undiscovered countryside and picturesque villages and old pubs. There is a good choice of cycle hire operations should you want to discover this area at a sedate speed and closer to the natural surroundings than is possible from a car. Here are a few:
Ride-On South West provides cycle hire with quality TREK cycles delivered to where you are staying.
Bikarooni will also provide cycle hire to where you are staying around Tarka Country.
Biketrail Cycle Hire is based on the Tarka Trail not far from Barnstaple
Tarka Trail Cycle Hire is based at Barnstaple Station, convenient for those coming by train on the Tarka Line from Exeter.
